At Pearl Custom Interiors we are in the midst of a large re-upholstery and re-decorating project for a local Ottawa company. In all, we are remaking over 40 armchairs and 16 sofas. We are also providing our client with some new custom upholstered armchairs to compliment their existing furniture. We’ll show the new chairs soon, but in the meantime here is a before and after view of some of the armchairs as they are transformed.
These are some of the chairs nearly ready to be re-upholstered. Notice that we strip back all the old worn out stuffing and cushioning, rebuilding the foundation of the piece as we progress. After re-upholstering at Pearl Custom Interiors the chairs are better than new.

I am a third generation Decorating Consultant. I got my start working with my Dad, Bob Pearl who was a shop@home decorator for Artistic Drapery in Hamilton. When I was a kid I would work in the shop on Saturdays and some evenings building custom Drapery tracks for the customers of Artistic Drapery. I moved on to assisting the store installer Mickey Gluck where I learned the basics of the trade. My Uncle, John Pearl had a shop in Hamilton with his wife Lynne called the Avon Window Shade company. Both my Uncle John and my Dad Bob were brought up in the business as well. My Grandfather James Pearl had a blind business in Hamilton for many years, in fact I was looking through one of the diaries my Grandmother kept years ago and his schedule from the 1950’s looks at lot like mine today. Although mine is kept on a Blackberry the contents are the same, listing appointments for consultations, meeting with trade representatives etc.
In the late 80’s I moved to Ottawa and spent several years working as an installer for various local shops before setting out on my own with a company I called ‘Installutions’. In this role I worked as an installer and consultant for many top local Ottawa interior designers, eventually expanding this business with the purchase of a local sewing workroom which I operated into the late 90’s. There I expanded my knowledge of the trade by learning the fabrication side of the Decorating business. I sewed many draperies, slipcovers, duvets and valances over those years. I also found myself doing more and more complete decorating projects including Embassies, Condominium lobbies, model homes and designing custom furniture.
Looking for a new challenge I found myself in the position of Eastern Ontario territory manager for Shade-O-Matic. I was responsible for a territory that included Northern Ontario and Eastern Ontario. In this role I worked with small dealers, national chains, designers and decorators to introduce new products to the marketplace. One of my many tasks was dealer training and I spent many weeks travelling my territory holding seminars on Shutters and Blinds for my dealers and their installers.
With a young family on the way I shifted gears again to a role which required less travel. I joined forces with a local institution in Ottawa, Riopelle Drapery. At Riopelles I ran the marketing and residential sales side of the business, re-introducing the company to residential clients. At the same time Gerry Riopelle continued to build the contract and commercial side of the business supplying many of the top builders and institutions in Ottawa.Over the course of 7 years I gained even more experience in working with clients to meet and exceed their decorating needs.
Always looking for new challenges, Rowena Pearl has joined me in the business we have formed as Pearl Custom Interiors. We consult with clients on a custom product line which includes, Drapery, Bedding, and Upholstery.
